I came across the above meme and couldn’t help but take a peek at MAiD statistics and ‘progressions’. I am just going to leave it at that, but this meme reflects how Canada’s MAiD law is being perceived outside of Canada.
2021 marked five full years since the Liberal goverment of Justin Trudeau passed Bill C-14, in 2016 introducing Medical Assistance in Dieing (MAID) in Canada. This allowed individuals to make a written request to receive a medical, physician’s assisted death, if their natural death was believed to be in the foreseeable future from a terminal illness such as cancer. Since 2016, the written request could be replaced with a verbal one, and then the initial ten day waiting period was dropped completely. In 2021, the Liberal goverment extended MAiD to those with serious or chronic physical conditions, even if that condition was non-life threatening, such as diabetes, COPD, or being wheelchair bound. These new extensions make Canada one ofthe most permssive euthanasia countries in the world.
In 2021, there were 10,029 medically assisted deaths in Canada, an increase of 34.7 percent from 7,446 deaths in 2020. (these are the most recent available statistics)
That brings the total number of MAiD deaths in Canada, since 2016 to 31,664. The annual growth in MAID deaths continues to increase steadily each year. In 2021, the total number of MAID provisions increased by 34.7% (2021 over 2020), compared to 34.3% (2020 over 2019) and 26.4% (2019 over 2018). This chart demonstrates a tenfold increase in MAiD deaths since 2016.
The Liberal government has stalled its move to further extend MAiD to people suffering from mental illness for a year. The government has, however made it clear that this is only a pause to ensure it ‘get’s it right’ in making this extension, but still plans to move ahead with the extension.
If you haven’t, you might want to read my Substack piece on that subject, and how ‘getting it right is problematic.’
MAiD is a great idea as long as Justin and his cronies lead by example and take up the offer first
If the rest of the population decide to change their minds after that, well its just too bad. :)
